BELFAST — Left Bank Books in Belfast is honored to welcome America's preeminent historian, David McCullough, on Saturday, August 19, at 10:00 a..m, in celebration of his newest book, The American Spirit: Who We Are and What We Stand For. This will be the only bookstore in Maine where McCullough will greet his legions of fans and sign copies of The American Spirit, as well as all of his previously published books. A large and festive crowd is expected at this event, which will be McCullough's fourth signing at Left Bank Books in 13 years.

McCullough has been widely acclaimed as a "master of the art of narrative history." He has won the Pulitzer Prize twice (for his biographies of presidents John Adams and Harry Truman), the National Book Award twice, and has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award. In 2014, he was named an Officer of the Legion of Honor by decree of the President of the Republic of France.

Over the course of McCullough's distinguished career, he has spoken before Congress, the White House, colleges and universities, historical societies, and other esteemed institutions. Now, as many Americans engage in self-reflection following last year's bitter election campaign that has left the country divided, McCullough has collected 15 of his most important speeches in The American Spirit.

In his Introduction, McCullough writes that he selected the speeches "with the hope that what I have had to say will help remind us, in this time of uncertainty and contention, of just who we are and what we stand for, of the high aspirations that inspired our founders, of our enduring values, and the importance of history as an aid to navigation in such troubled, uncertain times."

As with all of McCullough's books, The American Spirit has received outstanding reviews:

"In these clarifying and uplifting presentations, rich in historical anecdotes and portraits, [McCullough] speaks of freedom and
responsibility and courage and patience. At an Independence Day naturalization ceremony at Monticello, he told new Americans that the nation is richer for you. McCullough reminds us that, if we are beset by problems, we have always been beset by problems. And we have always drawn on our American spirit and convictions to find our way forward. — Booklist

"[McCullough] celebrates America's talent for curiosity, intelligence, goodwill, and humanity. Amid all of the dissimulation and discourtesy that demands our attention, these brief essays celebrating national aspirations are intended to remind readers that, regardless of shortcomings, Americans have largely strived to better themselves and their country." — Library Journal

Left Bank Books will open at 8:30 am on August 19. In addition to The American Spirit, all of McCullough's other books will be available for purchase. Reservations are not being taken for this event; those attending will be able to buy their books and meet Mr. McCullough on a first-come, first-served basis. If you can't make the signing, the bookshop is happy to take your order and have Mr. McCullough sign books that you can pick up or have shipped at a later time. Call 207-338-9009 to pre-order books in advance or with any questions. Left Bank Books is located at 109 Church St. in downtown Belfast, in the historic Opera House building.
