BELFAST — The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office and Belfast Police Department are warning the public about a phone scam that is targeting residents in greater Belfast.

According to police, individuals are attempting to scam Consumer Fuel customers via telephone by posing as representatives of the company.

Belfast Police reportedly discovered the ongoing scam when a representative of Consumer Fuel reported the issue on Sept.18.

The scam reportedly involves callers who are contacting Consumer Fuel customers in the Belfast area, and posing as fuel company employees, according to a written statement by Officer Michael Boucher of the Belfast Police Department.

During the scam calls, potential victims are told that Consumer Fuel needs “the credit card numbers that were on file in order to process a payment,” according to the statement.

Both law enforcement agencies are encouraging anyone who receives such a call to hang up. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office reiterated that citizens should never give out sensitive information by phone unless they have initiated the call and are positive they are speaking to a legitimate representative intended company.

Anyone who thinks they may have been a victim of the scam by providing credit card information is encouraged to report the incident to both the Belfast Police Department, and to their bank.
