Knox County Sheriff’s beat: harassment, speeding, crashes

    ROCKLAND — The Knox County Sheriff’s Office reported the following activity during the period of Aug. 10-16, 2014. An arrest does not imply guilt.

    Aug. 10

    Deputy Paul Pinkham responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Warren involving a single vehicle. The operator was summonsed for driving to endanger, as speed was a factor. Reportable damage was sustained.

    Deputy Pinkham responded to a report of an erratic vehicle in Washington. The vehicle and operator were located in Rockport and showed no signs of impairment.

    Deputy Robert Potter conducted a radar detail on Vinalhaven. No violations were noted.

    Subsequent to a traffic stop in Thomaston, Deputy John Hansen issued summonses for speed and passing on double yellow lines.

    Deputy Paul Spear began an investigation of harassment in Cushing. The female suspect was located and issued a warning.

    Deputies Lance Mitchell and Spear responded to a report of a domestic incident in Washington. This was a verbal argument only and the parties separated for the evening.

    Aug. 11

    Deputies Matt Elwell and Justin Hills conducted a radar detail in Union. No violations were noted.

    Subsequent to a traffic stop in St. George, Deputy Hansen issued a summons for operating after suspension.

    Deputy Hansen arrested Zacariah Sawyer, 20, of Waldoboro, on an outstanding warrant. Sawyer was transported to Knox County jail without incident and also charged with a probation violation.

    Sgt. James Moore responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Warren involving two vehicles. Reportable damage was sustained.

    Subsequent to a traffic stop in Cushing, Deputy Spear issued a summons for operating after suspension.

    Deputy Mitchell arrested John Schmiz Jr, 34, of Warren, on an outstanding arrest warrant. Subject was transported to the Knox County Jail without incident.

    Deputy Mitchell and Sgt. Moore responded to a report of a disorderly female in Appleton. Subsequent to this response, Crystal Glynn, 27, of Appleton, was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct. She was transported to Knox County Jail without incident.

    Aug. 12

    Deputy Elwell conducted a radar detail in Washington. One summons and seven warnings were issued for various traffic infractions.

    Deputy Elwell conducted a radar detail in Appleton. No violations were noted.

    Deputy Mitchell and Lt. Kirk Guerrette responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Washington involving a single vehicle. Reportable damage was sustained and the operator was issued a summons for operating after suspension.

    Deputy Mitchell responded to a report of a male making threats to harm himself in Washington. The male was located and transported to PBMC for an evaluation.

    Aug. 13

    Deputy Hansen arrested Holly Thibodeau, 42, of St. George, on an outstanding warrant. Subject was transported to Knox County Jail without incident.

    Deputy Elwell conducted a radar detail in Union. Five warnings for speed were issued.

    Deputy Elwell conducted a radar detail in Hope. One warning for speed was issued.

    Deputy Nathaniel Jack arrested Trevor Curtis, 23, of Thomaston, on an outstanding warrant. Curtis was transported to Knox County Jail without incident.

    Aug. 14

    Deputy Pat Polky began an investigation of trespassing on North Haven. Notices for same have been issued to the suspect.

    Deputy Spear responded to a motor vehicle crash in South Thomaston involving a single vehicle striking a bicyclist. Reportable damage was sustained. The bicyclist suffered from non-life threatening injuries.

    Deputy Jack responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Cushing involving a single vehicle striking a building. Reportable damage was sustained.

    Deputy Arthur Smith arrested Shawna Maker, 32, of Warren, on an outstanding warrant. Maker was transported to the Knox County Jail without incident.

    Deputy Smith and Lt. Guerrette responded to a report of a hit and run motor vehicle crash in Port Clyde. The suspect, Janita Marks, 50, of St. George, was located and subsequently arrested on a bail violation. Marks was transported to Knox County Jail without incident.

    Deputy Smith arrested Chad Sproul, 38, of Warren, on three outstanding warrants. Sproul was transported to the Knox County jail without incident.

    Aug. 15

    Deputy Smith responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Union involving a single vehicle striking a deer. There was no reportable damage.

    Deputy Mitchell began an investigation of harassment in Warren. The female suspect was located and issued a warning.

    Sgt. John Palmer responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Hope involving a single vehicle. Reportable damage was sustained.

    Deputy Polky responded to a request for a well-being check on an adult female on North Haven. The female was located off island and found to be all set.

    Deputy Spear conducted a countywide operating under the influence detail. Several stops were made with no arrests.

    Aug. 16

    Deputy Hansen responded to a report of an erratic vehicle in Union. The vehicle and operator were later located by Rockport police.

    Deputy Hansen conducted a radar detail in Appleton. One warning was issued.

    Deputy Potter responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash on Vinalhaven involving two vehicles. Non-reportable damage was sustained.

    Subsequent to a traffic stop in St. George, Deputy Hansen issued a summons for criminal speed.

    Deputy Elwell responded to a motor vehicle crash in Union involving two vehicles. Reportable damage was sustained.

    Subsequent to a traffic stop in Union, Deputy Elwell issued summonses for unnecessary acceleration noise and failure to provide proof of insurance.

    Deputy Elwell began an investigation of burglary in Union. This is still an active investigation with no suspects or leads at this time.

    Deputy Jeremy Joslyn arrested Donald Demmons, 49, of Warren, on a charge of violating conditions of release. Demmons was transported to Knox County Jail without incident.

    Deputy Elwell arrested Phillip McFadden, 21, of Waldo, on charges of violating conditions of release and refusing to submit to arrest. McFadden was transported to Knox County Jail without further incident.

    Deputy Mike Young and Sgt. Moore conducted a countywide operating under the influence detail. No arrests were noted.

    Subsequent to a traffic stop in Appleton, Sgt. Moore arrested Anthony Philbrook, 39, of Searsmont, on a charge of operating after suspension.

    In total, during this one-week period, the Knox County Sheriff's Office received 298 calls for service. Those calls that are not listed above are such calls as ATV problems, alarms, 911 hang-ups, along with nuisance, erratic vehicle and suspicious complaints.
