From Kathleen Meil: ‘I’ll be honored to earn your vote’

Friends and Neighbors: The Democratic primary for state representative is almost here. I'm honored to have the support of so many people throughout our community — people of every age and walk of life — and I urge you all to vote on June 14.

You've taught me a lot in the last few months. From playgrounds to public meetings to quiet conversations at your doors (and I've knocked on more than 1,500 doors in every corner of our towns!), you've shared your ideas and your questions, and you've filled me in on the issues that matter most to you. I'm incredibly grateful for your generosity of spirit.

What I've heard, time and time again, is that we must set a course for Maine's future that matches our outstanding quality of life with outstanding economic opportunity.

Supporting Maine families is essential, and high-quality education and childcare, living wages with flexible leave, and affordable health care are top priorities. My background as a public school teacher and experience as a working mom with children in our local schools gives me the understanding you expect from your legislators. That's why so many working families, teachers, and first-time voters support my candidacy.

Energy and environmental policy are crucial, and being endorsed by Sierra Club Maine is a tremendous honor that reflects exactly why I'm running: To be an informed, thoughtful steward of our vast natural resources and a visionary leader on clean energy policies that lower costs, create jobs, and protect our environment. We have a moral obligation to address these issues now to preserve quality of life for future generations.

Bold leadership and bipartisan collaboration is key, and my record demonstrates how capable I am of striking that balance. As chair of Rockport's elected Library Committee, I was often in the hot seat as our community wrestled with the complicated issue of future planning. Like every good leader, I earned both cheers and jeers, but neither distracted me from my commitment to serve my community.

As your state representative, I'll work on many aspects of state policy. You can hear my thoughts in this Democratic Primary candidates debate. I cannot promise that we'll always agree. But you have my word that I will always listen compassionately, ask thoughtful questions, and work my hardest for our community.

Election day is June 14. I'll see you at the polls, and I'll be honored to earn your vote.
