CAMDEN — Karen J. Good died peacefully Jan. 23, 2015, at her home, surrounded by friends and family.

Born in Newark, N.J., in 1941, from a young age, Karen's intelligence drove her to find her way independently in a world that was often oppressive to young woman. As a young single mother at the age of 19, Karen moved to New York City. It was there she met Michael Good while both were working as social activists on the lower east side of Manhattan.

In 1968, they decided to escape the chaos of the city and moved to Downeast Maine. For almost 10 years, they lived the quintessential "back to nature" lifestyle, living off the land in Edmunds Township. During their time there, Michael was beginning his career as a jeweler, which prompted their move to Midcoast Maine in 1978.

Karen decided to pursue her love of photography, going to school for broadcasting and working at local television stations for several years, as well as working for some time at the Maine Photographic Workshop in Rockport.

As Michael's business started to grow, Karen realized that he needed some help and decided to set aside her career in photography and join the fledgling company. In the years to follow, Karen would single handedly take care of the management of the business. Their partnership resulted in an internationally successful business.

In the 1980s, Karen was the recipient of the first Small Business Person of the Year award in the state of Maine, and was personally given the award by former Sen. Margaret Chase Smith, the legendary representative and U.S. senator from Maine. Karen also served as president of the local Chamber of Commerce and was well respected in the community. Over the years, she served on many local boards and committees, and was active in a number of organizations.

Throughout the latter part of her life, she continued to be an integral part of the family business.

Karen lived a full life of passion, strength, adversity and love. It is impossible in a few short paragraphs to convey the impact she had on so many, but her legacy will be cherished by all who knew her. A memorial gathering will be announced in the spring.

Karen is survived by her husband, Michael Good of Camden; her son, Gil Kleiman and daughter-in-law, Ilanit Kleiman of Israel; her son, Anton Good of Camden; her daughter, Avi Good and her husband, Peter Beal, of Rockport; her grandchildren, Alaric Beal, and Marylee, Shane and Liam Kleiman; her sister, Nan Bradshaw and her husband, Dean, of Dennysville; her sister, Beth Neuman of Richmond, Va.; as well as additional extended family.

Karen's self-rule was "give directly to those who are in the most need." We are blessed in the Midcoast to have dozens of valuable organizations and charities that are always in need. In lieu of flowers we request that you consider a donation to the organization of your choice.

Arrangements are with Long Funeral Home.
