Judge, Gilson guide MMA to victory

WATERVILLE — Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Colby College, 75-54, on Thursday night in non-conference action inside of Wadsworth Gymnasium.

In a tightly contested first half, the Mariners fought back from a 15-10 deficit and put together a six-point run to take a 16-15 advantage following a Riley MacLeod (Bucksport, Maine) layup with 11:21 to go. The Mules recaptured the lead but the Mariners battled back and tied the game at 20 on a Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine) basket with 9:22 left to halftime. Colby's Patrick Stewart hit back-to-back 3-point shots to push the lead to 26-20. Colby, which led from that point, took a 35-32 margin into halftime.

The Mules outscored the Mariners 40-22 in the second half to take the non-conference victory.

Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) led the Mariners with 18 points, two rebounds and a steal, Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) added nine points, one assist and one steal, and Tyler Gilson (Thomaston, Maine) led all players with nine rebounds, while also chipping in with six points. Judge and Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) also added six points for Maine Maritime.

Patrick Stewart led the Mules with 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal, while teammate Maximilian Steiner scored 15 points and pulled down six rebounds, dished out six assists, and two steals, and Sean Gilmore added 13 points, five rebounds, two blocks, and one steal.

The Mariners fall to 1-4 on the season and the Mules improve to 4-2 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action next Tuesday, December 6 when they host Husson University for their home opener at 5:30 pm.
