Johanna "Jo" Tutone 68, of Swanzey, N.H., and formerly of Tenant's Harbor, died March 19, 2015, at Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, N.H. She passed peacefully after a period of declining heath with her family at her side.

Johanna was born the daughter of Marion (Panzera) and John Tutone on May 9, 1946, in Queens, N.Y. She was educated in Syosset, N.Y., and graduated from Syosset High School, Class of 1964. Jo went on in her education graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Jo began her career at Macy's in New York as a buyer.

Her love of adventure and New England brought her to Killington, Vt., some years later where she began her career as a chef. She worked at the Summit Lodge and the Red Rob Inn and began to summer in Maine, cooking on the windjammers. Soon Maine called her full time and she bought Cappy's Chowder House with Andrea Young in 1979. She later became the sole proprietor. She invested her heart and soul into the business, transforming it into a vibrant restaurant, caterer, bakery and store. She was known throughout the Midcoast for the best "events" around, whether those were catered by Cappy's or held in her boat house, barn or on the patio.

She had a huge heart and was always giving to others, including family, friends or the community. She was a part of the St. George Conservation Commission, Clean-up Day, holiday fuel assistance program and spent hours at the Maine Seacoast Mission in Bar Harbor. She served on the Board of Trustees of the Penobscot Bay Marine Museum. As owner of Cappy's she was involved in the region's Chamber of Commerce, the state hospitality association and numerous community activities.

Johanna loved antiques and restoring older properties. She left her mark on a number of homes in Maine. She collected many antique treasures over the years and her homes were remarkable. She traveled whenever opportunity presented itself and had friends all around the world. She loved to ski, sail, garden, hike and explore. Most of all she loved to be surrounded by family and friends and hosting parties, big and small. In the words of one of her friends, "she taught us the meaning of true friendship".

Johanna is survived by her mother, Marion Tutone of Swanzey. She is also survived by her sister, Catherine A. "Cathy" Gray and her husband, Jim, of Swanzey; and nephews, Jonathan Gray and his wife, Shayne, and Matthew Gray and his partner, Joleen; and her niece, Lisa Blatter and her husband, Kevin, and their families. She will also be missed by her cousins, extended family and friends. Jo is predeceased by her father, John Tutone, who passed on April 10, 2006.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, April 11, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Cheshire Family Funeral Chapel and Crematories, 44 Maple Ave. in Keene, N.H. Prayer for the departed will be given at 2:30 p.m.
