NORTHPORT — Joanne Sigrid (Larsen) Batty, 66, of Northport, died unexpectedly Feb. 23, 2015, at her home.

Born Jan. 3, 1949, in Redlands, Calif., she was the daughter of the late Magnus Otto Larsen and the late Louise Anna (Webel) Larsen, both formerly of Santa Barbara, Calif. She graduated from high school in California and then attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. She met her husband while at the University of Massachusetts.

She and her husband were Coast Guard licensed captains and for a number of years lived in the Caribbean, where they were involved in the yacht charter trade. They eventually settled in the eastern Penobscot Bay area of Maine. Joanne previously worked for Avocet Systems in Rockland as director of account auditing, and most recently for Downeast Pension Services Inc. in Rockport as a pension administrator. She very recently retired from Downeast on Jan. 1, 2015.

She was a member of Pope Memorial Humane Society, the ASPCA, The Humane Society of the U.S. and Amnesty International. Joanne's recent retirement had her looking forward to more time enjoying the simple things in life like tending her lovely gardens, keeping up with current world news, barbequing in her yard with friends and spending time with her loyal dog, Dupont, and loving cat, Toby. She also took a yearly trip to Eastport to a special place she and her late husband used to visit.

Joanne's friends will remember special times they shared, and cherish those memories and her inspiration, as she was taken too soon. She is remembered fondly by her co-workers and close friends, Linda, Terrianne, Sonny, Nathan and many others who did not get to say good-bye.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Batty of Northport. She is survived by her close friend, Linda Clark of Belfast; and her first cousins, Fredrick Webel of Walpole, Carl Troyano of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Roger Smith and Bette Smith Tanton of Denver, Colo.

A private memorial will be held this summer.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, PO Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.

Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home.
