CAMDEN — Joan C. Lawton, 87, died Aug. 21, 2015, at Anderson Inn in Camden, where she had resided for the last seven years. Born in Rockport on April 7, 1928, she was the daughter of John Henry and Bernice (Robbins) Carver. A graduate of Rockport High School Class of 1946, Joan was an honor graduate and was the award recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

On Sept. 5, 1948, she married Stephen Goodrich Lawton Jr. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Camden.

Joan worked from 1947 to 1975 at the Rockland office of New England Telephone Company. In 1976 she went to work as the receptionist in the Rockland office of Fred. S. James Insurance, which later became the Allen Agency, and retired in 1989.

She enjoyed working in her gardens while living in Rockport.

An active communicant at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Joan had been a choir member, served on the vestry and also as treasurer. She was a past matron and 50+ year member of the Harbor Light Chapter and Ocean View Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

The Lawton family would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to all of the administrative staff, nurses and certified nurses assistants at Quarry Hill who have taken such very good care of Joan.

Predeceased by her husband, Stephen in 2010; a sister, Vera Gerrish; and a sister-in-law, Betty Bartlett in 2014; Joan is survived by her son, Kenneth Lawton and his life partner, Karen Barrett, of Belmont; her grandson, Christopher Lawton and his wife, Sara Wickenden, of Rockport; her great-grandson, Bode Lawton; her step great-grandsons, Finn and Carver Emory of Rockport; Scot Orchow and his wife, Erika, and their son, Maxwell, of Portland; a brother-in-law, Robert Bartlett of Oakland; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Aug. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 9 Mountain St. in Camden. The funeral mass followed by a reception will be held Thursday, Aug. 27 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Camden with the Rev. John Rafter officiating. Burial will follow in Amesbury Hill Cemetery in Rockport.
