SOUTH THOMASTON — Jeanie Billings, fondly known as "Deedee" to friends and relatives, passed away peacefully Oct. 6, 2015, surrounded by her family at the Sussman House in Rockport.

Born in Stonington on Oct. 24, 1925, she was the daughter of Estelle Reid Noyes and Capt. Robert Delmar Hutchinson. All of her young life was spent around Deer Isle, where she graduated from Stonington High School. Jeanie first left the island to attend Gorham State Teachers' College.

She married Edward Byron "Bump" Billings and together the two moved to Rockland. They raised a family of four children together, spending summers at a family cottage on Washington Pond and visiting offshore islands on their boat, Jeanie R. They eventually moved to South Thomaston. Edward passed away in 1981, and Jeanie went on to help raise a new generation of grandchildren.

Jeanie is predeceased by her husband, Edward Billings; her brothers, John Reid, Elwood Sawyer, Frank Sawyer and Robert Hutchinson; and her sisters, Climena Sawyer Knight and Elizabeth Sawyer Ahern.

She is survived by her children, Ellen Fales and her husband, Jeffery, of Durham, Afton Stenger and her husband, Robert “Rocky,” of St. George, Jayne Cushman and her husband, Jeffrey, of South Thomaston, and Edward Billings and his wife, Laura, of Washington; nine grandchildren, Robert Stenger, Jason Stenger and his wife, Rebecca, Kara Cushman, Taylor Stenger and his wife, Meredith, Nathaniel Cushman and his wife, Jessica, Shannon Stenger, Jeanie Cushman, Monica Maniatakos and her husband, Dimitri, and Ericka Billings; four great-grandchildren, Logan and Kaileigh Cushman, Inara Stenger, and Evelina Maniatakos. She is also survived by her lifelong friend, Glenna Aldrich, whom she grew up with in Stonington; and her longtime friends, Marchia Firth and Dorothy Jackson.

A celebration of Jeanie's life and memories is planned for mid-November. Please contact the family for more information. A special thanks to Pen Bay Healthcare's Sussman House, whose hospice facilities made her passing bearable and peaceful for her family.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home.
