CUSHING — Jeannette Anderson passed away May 6, 2017. Born in Rockland, she was a daughter of Ashley M. and Eva P. Closson Leach, attended Rockport and Camden schools, and was a 1950 graduate of Camden High School.

Among various jobs, she worked as a clerk and bookkeeper for several area businesses, including Quigley's Taxi, M & G Sportwear, Robert E. Cain Plumbing and The Smiling Cow.

In 1952, she married Reynold (Andy) Anderson, of Cushing. They began their life together by spending their first winter in Florida, then returned home to Maine and settled in Rockland. In 1958, they moved to Cushing to make a home and raise their family in the house Reynold built, and she lived there until her death.

She was a member of the Cushing Town Club, a Girl Scout troop leader, a Cub Scout den mother and a school field trip chaperone. A child of the Great Depression and World War II, she was taught the values of frugality and generosity at an early age and lived those values throughout her life. She was an avid vegetable and flower gardener, bird feeder and watcher, and was proud of her homemaker talents of cooking and baking, canning and pickling, sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, and rug braiding, and shared those talents readily with younger generations so they would live on in others.

In her later years, she was a member of the Broad Cove Community Church sewing circle and a jigsaw puzzle exchange network, and for several years knitted winter hats and mittens to give to children at the Cushing Community School.

Predeceased by her parents; her husband; her sisters, Claribel Thomas and Betty Beveridge Ames; and her brothers, Melvin and Edwin Leach; she is survived by her daughter, Susan Ewen and son-in-law Scott; her son Joe; and her granddaughter, Rebecca Ewen, all of Cushing; her sisters, Avis Acorn of Rhode Island and Carol Gilbert and her husband, Wallace, of Waterford; her brother, Bruce Leach and his wife, Judy, of Bowdoin; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

A private service will be held at the convenience of her family.

In honor of her lifelong love and respect for animals, donations may be made in her name to Pope Memorial Humane Society, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.

Arrangements were made through Long Funeral Home and Cremation in Camden.
