ROCKLAND —The Island Institute will host a special evening conversation on Saturday, December 9, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., with chef and author Barton Seaver, and Rob Snyder, Ph.D, president of the Island Institute, discussing Barton's new book, American Seafood: Heritage, Culture & Cookery from Sea to Shining Sea. The event will take place at the Island Institute, 386 Main Street in Rockland, with a cocktail reception and book signing to follow in Archipelago, the Island Institute's store.

Barton Seaver has spent more than two decades pursuing his passion for seafood both in the kitchen and on the water. As an award-winning chef, he ran highly acclaimed restaurants in Washington, DC, then following a successful culinary career, he turned his focus towards fisheries and conservation as an explorer for the National Geographic Society. The author of several books on the topic of sustainable seafood and cookery, Seaver now lives in Maine on a working waterfront, among the fishermen he admires and honors with his work.

Seaver's latest book, American Seafood: Heritage, Culture & Cookery from Sea to Shining Sea, is a book for foodies, anglers, cooks, and history buffs — an essential guide to more than 500 species and a riveting history of one of our country's most iconic industries. Through essays, prose, and thoughtfully curated artwork, this 528-page book supplies a refreshing, fascinating, and timely social history of our maritime nation.

This special event is free and open to the public, but space is limited to 40 guests in person. Additional participation will also be available online via a free video conferencing service.

Pre-registration is required for in-person attendance and advised for online participation.
