Inaugural Galloping Galipeau 5K honors a friend, raises money for Boy Scouts

WARREN — The inaugural Galloping Galipeau Memorial 5K Race, held June 22 at Odd Fellows Hall in Warren and hosted by Boy Scout Troop 254, drew 86 runners and walkers in honor of Paul Galipeau and to benefit local Boy Scouts.

Paul Renee Galipeau of Warren was the former Boy Scouts of America Troop Committee chair and co-founder of Troop 254. Galipeau was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in August 2012, and the race was held to remember his spirit and amazing dedication to Boy Scouting. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, serving as district training chair and OA Chapter advisor. He was a long-time Scouter on the local, district and council levels, and a tremendous asset in training numerous volunteers throughout the years. The father of three Boy Scouts, he was instrumental in bringing a strong Scouting program to the Warren community.

The opening ceremonies began with three horseback riders bearing the Troop's flag standards and the American flag. The fourth, Janette Ross, led her riderless horse, with boots on backwards and Paul's brand, to signify the "last ride" of Paul R. Galipeau. The Color Guard of Troop 254 accepted the colors and raised the flag. A prayer was given by Troop Chaplain's Aide Richard Kinney and Mike McNeil, brother-in-law to Galipeau, and event coordinators Amanda and Paul Shelmerdine, welcomed the crowd and racers.

The Scouts and leadership of Troop 254 would like to thank the following for their help in making this event a resounding success:

Sponsors: The Family of Paul R. Galipeau, Local Color Salon, J.M. Carney Electrical, Warren Lodge #127 I.O.O.F., Warren Day Committee, Knox Machine Company, Holgerson Inc., Children's Collaboration Center, Genuine Automotive and The Playroom.

Supporters: Maine Printing & Embroidery, Swift Storage, Rockcoast Sports, Penobscot Bay YMCA, Warren Public Works Department, Warren Recreation and Damariscotta Banking & Trust Co.

Paul's wife, Judy Galipeau, started the race by firing a starting gun. The Galipeau family, including Paul and Judy's son Hunter, Paul's sons Scott and Sean and their families, along with many others were on hand to either walk, run or volunteer for the race alongside Scouts, families and friends of Scouting.

Money raised from this year's event, and future annual race events, will go toward scholarships for Troop 254 Scouts and adult leaders to attend leadership training – a focus near and dear to Paul's heart.

There were seven age categories, and two divisions: walkers and runners. A trophy wasawarded to the top finisher in each category and division: 12 and Under, 13 - 18 years, 19 - 29 years, 30 - 39 years, 40 - 49 years, 50 - 59 years and 60+ years

Awards were also given out to the top Scout and Adult Scouter finishers.

The Top Scout was awarded to Christopher Shelmerdine, 14, from Troop 254 in Warren, with a time of 21:10. Top Adult BSA Scouter was awarded to Owen Maguire, York district executive from Pine Tree Council, with a time of 24:14.
