CAMDEN — It’s one week until Memorial Day, when Americans take some time out to honor those who died serving the country in the armed forces. And seven days out, it’s also time to place flags on the graves of veterans buried at Mountain View Cemetery.

Camden’s annual Memorial Day parade winds through town and culminates at the cemetery north of downtown, along Mountain Street (Route 52). The Camden Hills Regional High School band follows the color guard, and marches along with others to the cemetery, where folks gather for words of remembrance, music, taps, prayer and a salute.

Today, May 23, at 4 p.m, Rosey Gerry and other veterans will be gathering at the cemetery to place flags on the many veterans graves at the cemetery. Volunteers are welcome to join in and help, which will make the work go quickly, he said.

“We could use all the help we could get as there are a lot to put out. If we have a good crew it takes about an hour or less,” said Gerry. “If you’re available to help with this, just show up.”
