SEARSPORT — Searsport District Middle/High School will present Spamalot, a musical comedy adapted from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, November 18 and 19, at 7 p.m. in the school’s theater/cafeteria at 24 Mortland Road in Searsport.

The production follows the trail of King Arthur, played by Cole Dubois and his trusty, coconut banging, steed Patsy, played by Holden Clapp, as they travel England in search of knights for the Round Table.

Chris Goosman, who directed the 27 students involved in the musical, said she has watched her students sing the songs through the years and has even seen students galloping through the halls with coconuts.

"This was the group that I thought could pull it off," she said. "And they have not disappointed me. The cast is mostly high school students, but it was open to middle school students as well and we do have some middle school students in the cast."

Goosman said the production has been a lot of fun to direct and watch.

"I would probably get in a lot of trouble if I said there was a favorite part or scene," she said. "However, it's not uncommon for me to say that's my favorite part one day, and the next rehearsal say now that's my favorite part. It changes day to day, rehearsal to rehearsal."

Goosman said she was impressed by how much improvisation has been brought into the show.

"What if we made the shrubbery out of cats, "she said. "That was an improv moment. I enjoy watching Arthur and Patsy, we see them all throughout the show. Those two guys are spot-on and these are the two who have been practicing it for years."

Goosman said she has had a lot of fun with the show, but not as much as the students.

"There's a little stress right now because we are coming up on opening night," she said. "As a director, as well as a producer — because when you're in a small school you wear a lot of different hats — I'm painting sets along with them, I'm doing design with my class, I'm going shopping at good will to find what we're missing, so the kids are having a lot more fun then me."

Goosman has been directing theater at Searsport Middle/High School for 20 years.

Eran Raines is a junior at the school. She plays six characters in the musical.

"I guess I'm good at switching characters," she said. "And we needed a lot more people then we had. My favorite character is a Laker Girl. She's a cheerleader and a bride, she gets married at the end, she's a Can-Can dancer in one scene. She does a ton of stuff and it's really fun."

Raines is no stranger to theater. She's been involved since her freshman year and played the lead in Little Shop of Horrors, last year.

Raines is also one of the minstrels to Sir Robin. After her senior year she would like to go on and study theater in college.

"I love all my fellow cast members," she said. "It's fun being in a show with people you go to school with, because you get to bond with people that you maybe wouldn't get to otherwise. The dynamics change from year to year and character to character."

The stage musical promises to be as irreverent as the movie. Spamalot, had a successful run on Broadway and won numerous Tony Awards. The script and musical was written by original Monty Python member Eric Idle.
