Husson too tough for Judge, DePatsy and Maine Maritime

CASTINE — Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Husson University 90-76, on Tuesday evening in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Smith Gymnasium.

The Mariners put together a 14-4 run to open up the game, led by five points from Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) and four points from Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine). Back-to-back jumpers from the Eagles closed the gap to six, but the Mariners splashed threes on their next two offensive possessions to take their biggest lead of the first half (25-14).

The Eagles orchestrated a 13-1 run to take a one-point lead with 6:34 to go, but Maine Maritime's Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) sank a 3-pointer to give the Mariners a two-point lead. The two teams exchanged the lead five times before the Eagles outscored the Mariners 11-4 to take a 48-42 advantage into halftime.
Maine Maritime closed the gap to three points with 8:55 to play in the second half, following a 13-2 run that was sparked by five points from Newcomb, but the Eagles scored seven unanswered points to retake a 70-60 lead with 7:10 to play. The Mariners cut the deficit to nine, but could not battle back and the Eagles hung on for the victory.

Newcomb ended the evening with 18 points, four assists, two steals, and a rebound, teammate Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) also tallied 18 points for the Mariners, while pulling down four rebounds, dishing out three assists, and two steals, and Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) added 13 points, two rebounds and an assist. Judge chipped in with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal.

Husson's Raheem Anderson led all players with 23 points, while pulling down five rebounds, dishing out two assists and tallying two steals. Eli Itkin added 17 points, five rebounds, five steals, two assists and a block off the bench, Mitch Worcester added 15 points, two rebounds, and two assists and Justin Martin scored 12 points, pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, tallied three blocks, two steals, and assist. Connor Adams rounded out the Eagles in double-digits with 10 points, three rebounds, and two assists.

The Mariners fall to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference, while the Eagles improve to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in the NAC. Maine Maritime travels to New Hampshire for a NAC doubleheader beginning at New England College on Friday night at 5:30 p.m., before traveling to Colby-Sawyer on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. game.
