MORRILL — Howard Herbert passed away on June 4, 2017, at Tall Pines in Belfast. Howard was born Dec. 13, 1921, to Thirza (Cross) and George Herbert in Waldo, the youngest of five.

He met his beautiful bride at Poors Mills dance hall, where they learned to dance. They were sweethearts throughout high school and were married Oct. 3, 1940, in Morrill.

A year later he bought a farm on Rowe Hill in Morrill and developed what was known as Hill Top Poultry Farm, one of the largest poultry farms in the state of Maine during the mid 1950s. He also ran a sawmill, built roads, did carpentry, worked in the woods with his horses and was a deputy sheriff for 20 years.

In 1969 Howard sold his farm on Rowe Hill and built his new home in the village. Howard started a construction business and built 13 homes in the town of Morrill. The last home he built was his grandson Scott's.

In 1977 Howard and Doris spent their first winter residing at Zephyr Shore Estates. It was the first of 20 winters there, enjoying retirement and serving on various committees in the park. Howard also served as director for several years at the estate.

Howard served on the board of selectman for 11 years and two of those years as chairperson. He was involved in many organizations like 4-H Club, Boy Scouts and the grange. He was most proud of belonging to the Masonic Order for over 70 years.

Howard was a humble, trustworthy, dependable, generous friend. He loved his family, was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather.

Howard was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Louise Joyce, Nell Thompson and Effie Herbert; and a brother, Freeman Herbert. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Doris; his son, Dennis and daughter-in-law Stephanie Herbert; his grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Scott and Dianna Herbert, his other grandchildren, Stephen, Joshua and Rosanna; his great-grandchildren, Samantha, Craig and Jesse; his great-great-grandchild, Annabelle; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, June 10, from 2 to 4 p.m., with a memorial service to be held at 3:30 p.m. at Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave. in Belfast.
