CAMDEN — A woman who was employed as a housekeeper in a Camden home has been charged with theft, after she admitted to police that she stole prescription medication from her employer.

Samara Kurek, 37, of Camden, was charged Jan. 12 by Camden Police Detective Curt Andrick with theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, a Class D crime.

According to Lt. Mike Geary, the homeowner first contacted police Nov. 29, 2016, about the theft. Kurek was arrested following an investigation by Andrick.

Geary said that homeowners can do a background check for employees they hire to work in their homes. Searches can be done with the Maine State Bureau of Identification at Maine.gov for a nominal fee.

He also encourage citizens to dispose of their unused prescription medications in April, when the department participates in the Maine Drug Enforcement Administration’s annual drug take-back program. Medications can also be dropped off anytime at the police station.

Kurek will make her initial court appearance in Knox County Unified Court in Rockland on March 20.
