A 57-year-old male from Mount Vernon was found deceased along a hiking trail in Rome late last evening, March 16. The male was last seen yesterday at about 1 p.m. when he left a parking area to snowshoe to the top of Round Top Mountain.

Members of the Rome Fire Department located the male just after 9 p.m while conducting a ground search with game wardens. Searchers had been searching trails off the Watson Pond Road.

Maine State Police along with Belgrade Rescue assisted on scene. Although it appears as though the cause of death may be exposure, the Maine Chief Medical Examiner’s Office has been contacted and will be evaluating this incident, according to a news release from the Maine Office of Public Safety.

The name of the man is not being released at this time until family notifications have been made.
