High School basketball roundup - Jan. 30

With just two or three games left in the regular season for some teams it comes down to these last few games to determine the future of the season. Now is the time you need every win, but with the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point System, one big win can get you over the hump and into the postseason.

Here are some recaps that were reported from recent games. Coaches are always encouraged to send results after your games. A photo of the away and home scorebook emailed to sports@penbaypilot.com

BOYS BASKETBALL
Nokomis 63, Camden Hills 47 ... At Newport, the Windjammers made the trip to Nokomis for a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class Class A matchup.

With the loss the Windjammers fall to 2-14 with two games left on the schedule. They will play Cony Tuesday, Feb. 2 and Lawrence Thursday, Feb. 4. A pair of wins or even a win over just Lawrence could turn the Camden Hills season around. Both games are at home.

In Newport Nokomis took a 14-2 lead and built it to a 27-13 half time score. Camden made a good run in the third quarter outscoring the Warriors 23-11 to make it Nokomis 38, Camden Hills 36 heading into the final stanza. That is where Nokomis turned up the heat taking a 25-11 score in the fourth quarter for the win.

Scoring for Camden Hills were, Noah Heidorn had 12 points; Gage Corson 11; Julian Starbird, Dalton Oakes and Morgan Ford six each; Devin Vangel four; and Daniel Peabody two.

Camden was 7-of-14 (50 percent) from the full line. They knocked down four 3-pointers, two from Starbird and one each from Gage and Vangel.

For Nokomis, Zach Hartsgrove had a game high 18 points; Joshua Smestad and Brad Allen had 12 each; Alexander Baird, Ethyn Butler, and Joshua Perry four each; and Alexander Chipman, Jakob Erskine, and Matthew Lyford three each. The Warriors were 13-of-19 (69 percent) from the foul line.

Belfast 62, Erskine 40 ... At Belfast, The Lions picked up another win over visiting Erskine Academy of So. China.

Belfast has two games left, They will host Oceanside Tuesday, Feb. 2 and will travel to Medomak Valley to finish up the season Thursday, Feb. 4. The Lions are currently in eighth place in the Heal Point Standings at 8-8. The top 12 teams in Class B North make the postseason. A win over either of these Class A teams would move Belfast up two or three spots.

On Thursday the scorers for Belfast were, Nolan Woods with 20 points; Zane Bielenberg 11; Stanley Sturgis eight; Rory Ambrose seven; Zeke Ventura five; Garrett Hamlin and Jordan Bickford four each; and Ian Snowdeal two.

Belfast was 5-of-8 (63 percent) from the foul line. The Lions had five 3-pointers, four from Woods, and one from Bielenberg.

For Erskine Josh Reed had eight points. The Eagles were 8-of-13 (62 percent) from the foul line.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lincoln Academy 51, Oceanside 43 ... At Newcastle, The Eagles hosted the Mariners Thursday and handed the visitors a loss.

Oceanside falls to 7-9 on the season with two games left to play in the regular season. They will host Belfast Tuesday, Feb. 2 and travel to Gardiner Thursday, Feb. 4. Oceanside is currently in 10th place in the Heal Point Standings. Belfast will not help them much if the win that one, but a win over Gardiner would assure postseason play. Unless Brewer or Medomak Valley pull off an upset in the final two game the Mariners should be in the postseason. Only the top 10 in Class A North to to the tournament.

In Thursday's game Oceanside took a 14-13 first quarter lead, but Lincoln Academy came back to take a 22-18 half time lead. By the end of the third quarter the Eagles had built a 10-point 34-24 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Scoring for Oceanside were, Makenna Brooks with a game high 16 points; Brianna Dugan eight; Alexis Mazurek seven; Ari Curtis six; Kalyn Grover four; and Gabby Simmons two. Oceanside was 3-of-5 (60 percent from the foul line and they had five 3-pointers, two each from Dugan and Curtis and one from Brooks.

For Lincoln Academy, Brie Wajer had 15 points; Samantha Burke 10; Cagney O'Brien six; Alyx York and Dorothy Hodus five each; Avae Triana three, Olivia York, Chloe Hallowell and Brianna Genther two each; and Baily Plourde one. Lincoln Academy was 10-of-17 (59 percent) from the foul line and they had one 3-pointer from Hodus.
