Heroes 4 Hunger 5K takes place this weekend, snow or shine

Wed, 11/26/2014 - 2:00pm

BELFAST — On Saturday, Nov. 22 in the early hours of the morning, 250 volunteers gathered at warehouse space graciously lent by GEO, Inc. to help pack and deliver over 15 tons of Thanksgiving food into 905 boxes destined to every town in Waldo County.

Each year, Waldo Community Action Partners' Heroes 4 Hunger program partners with People for People to provide more than 2,000 boxes of holiday food between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Thanksgiving project alone presents the organizations with a $23,000 grocery bill. The cost of food is covered entirely by community donations from businesses, civic groups, and individuals.

Saturday, November 29, there will be a 5K race/walk spearheaded by WCAP board member Jessica Woods to benefit the WCAP Heroes 4 Hunger program. The 5K will raise funds and awareness for the Thanksgiving and Christmas food box projects. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m.

The 5K will begin and end at Belfast Area High School and is a mostly flat course through residential Belfast.

Each registration buys a box of food including a turkey and all the fixings for a traditional holiday meal for a Waldo County family in need.

Waldo Community Action Partners is a charitable, educational, private non-profit organization located in Belfast. It is designed to utilize and mobilize public and private resources to assist low-income Waldo County residents in the alleviation of poverty and address its underlying causes.
