UNION — Herbert T. Griffin, 91, passed away on Nov. 9, 2016, at his home. He was born Sept. 24, 1925, in Boston, Mass., to Chester and Adeline Hall Griffin.

Soon after finishing high school in North Attleboro, Mass., in 1943, Herb entered the service, attending Officer Candidate School and graduated as a second lieutenant. Following additional training in the Army Corps of Engineers, he finished his three years in the service with a year's duty in Japan.

In 1950 he married Audrey Hewitt of Brownville Junction, Maine, and in 1951 graduated from University of Maine as a mechanical engineer. He then worked as an instrumentation engineer for 21 years with Bailey Meter Company of Cleveland, Ohio, spending his last 15 years as a resident engineer, living in Augusta.

Herb's hobbies included building, tinkering with and fixing things, camping and just working on his land. Herb also had a wonderful bass voice and loved singing in his church choir.

In 1972 he accepted a position with the production department of Central Maine Power Company, ending his career as assistant to the executive vice president. Prior to his retirement in 1985, Herb and Audrey bought 12 acres of land in Union, and later built their retirement home there, the log home of their dreams overlooking sunsets over Seven Tree Pond. In Union and Warren, Herb did much to improve facilities of both the Union Methodist Church and later at the Warren Congregational Church and as of January 2012, back to Peoples United Methodist Church of Union. He also was responsible for many years for the Union Historical Society's 1840 Old Town House. But above all of this, Dad loved to serve his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Though their four children live in distant parts of the United States, he and Audrey took many trips to visit and help their daughter and their sons.

He leaves his wife, Audrey Griffin of Union; his sons, Dale of Evanston, Ill., Wayne of Chippewa Falls, Wisc., and David of Tacoma, Wash.; his daughter, Martha Jackson of Union; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Friends are welcome to join the family for a time of visitation on Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 9 to 10 a.m. at Peoples United Methodist Church in Union, followed by services at 10 a.m. and then a reception. Interment will be at the Maine Veteran's Cemetery in Augusta.

Contributions may be made in Herb's name to People's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 105, Union, ME 04862.

Hall's of Waldoboro has care of the arrangements.
