WARREN — Harold V. “Had” Grant, 79, died Oct. 8, 2015, at the Sussman House in Rockport, after an extended illness.

Born in Harrington on July 8, 1936, he was one of 12 children of Owen W. and Grace Hartford Grant. He attended Harrington schools.

He married Laura E. Flaherty in Harrington, where they made their home more than 10 years, until moving to Warren in 1964.

Self-employed all his life, Harold was able to provide well for his family by hard work and using his hands. He worked in the woods, fished for eels, dug worms and sold worms, and peddled fish and shrimp in the winter. He also enjoyed hunting and trapping and was accomplished at curing pelts. Harold was best known as “The Christmas Tree Man,” as he thoroughly enjoyed growing and selling Christmas trees.

He was also known as a story teller and jokester, who could strike up a conversation about anything, with anyone.

He loved entertaining in his home, filling the table with friends for good food and great conversation. He often baked biscuits, which he particularly liked with deer steak.

Regular trips to Spencer Bay, at Moosehead Lake, were favorite pastimes. He enjoyed camping there and regaled fellow campers with his stories and jokes. His favorite place to be was outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He often went rabbit hunting with the family dog, Rebell.

Harold prided himself in creating a self-sufficient life style for his family. He kept beautiful and large gardens, as well as livestock animals to provide for his family.

He was a regular every morning for coffee and conversation at Andes in Warren. He was extremely proud of, loved and bragged about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Harold is survived by his wife, Laura of Warren; three sons and their wives, Stephen H. and Pamela Grant of Lee, Vernon L. and Toni Grant of Waldoboro, and Larry D. and Cathy Grant of Warren; one brother, Carlton Grant and his wife, Mavis, of Jonesport; six grandchildren, Michelle Hammond, Stephanie Grant, Carla Grant, Sarah Cowan, Amy Grant and Jessika Grant; seven great-grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth, Shi Lynn, Madison, Jackson, Levi, Adriana and Braden; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Saturday, Oct. 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland. A graveside committal service will be held Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. at Rock Maple Cemetery in North Millbridge.
