Lincolnville Community Library hosts the (non)musical group

Guys in tuxes who sing a cappella... it has to be the OffBeats

LINCOLNVILLE – Ten guys in tuxes singing a cappella. Camden Hills Regional High School's most prestigious, accomplished (and, admittedly, only) a cappella group, the OffBeats are a group of handsome young souls searching for higher truth in music (and money).

They founded the group September 1, 2009.

Nick Watts, one of the group's members, said it started with a couple of guys singing. They decided it sounded good but would be better a cappella.

"We started with just four guys," he said. "It just grew from there."

Miles Kelley does most all of the groups arrangements.

"First, I'll listen to a song and then find the chord changes," he said. "Then you put it all together into a song. Sometimes you just make it up as you go along, but it comes together into a song."

Kelley said he would be interested in a career in music. He is also a member of the jazz band, the Extension Cords, which is a three member ensemble.

The OffBeats have a spring concert coming up in May that is part of the high school’s concert and Fine Arts Night.

The OffBeats are a student-led group, but Watts said they have a deal with choral director Kim Murphy that they will perform in choral concerts, in return for some autonomy.

Watts said they enjoy their independent status and it allows for freedom.

The OffBeats are available for hire. The cost depends on the venue; $150 will get you from 45 minutes to an hour.

Watts said the easiest way to contact them is through their Facebook page for information and availability.

Rosey Gerry was responsible for bringing the OffBeats to the library.

"Once a month we'll bring in a musical act," he said. "I've known the OffBeats for sometime and always enjoyed their performances. I knew they would be a hit here at the library. The OffBeats performed at the library two years ago."

In May, Gerry will bring the Harborside Harmony Group into the library. They are a women's singing group styled after barbershop quartets.

Gerry said the library's July picnic and auction is a big event for the library.

Elizabeth Eudy, Lincolnville Community Library Director, said the library offers a variety of community programs.

"We do crafts and knitters and travel," she said. "We have authors and artists, poetry and music. I'm in awe of the number of programs we offer, more than 80 in 2017 alone."

Eudy says that people keep up with all the events through the library's Facebook page and website. She said they are also on the Lincolnville bulletin board.

"We usually have a program on the second Wednesday of the month," she said. "On the third Wednesday of the month Rosey Gerry will bring in a musical program."

Eudy said the writers group meets twice a month and the first Friday of the month is kids Friday.
