Guini Ridge Farm Hosts Kids Straw Bale Gardening Program

 Straw bale gardening is a fun way to garden in small spaces or in areas with poor soil quality.  The season-long program is open to children 6 to 10 who would like to learn how to plant, grow and harvest gourds, pumpkins and flowers in the Guini Ridge Farm straw bale demonstration garden.  Children will get a chance to plant their own seeds, them return to plant the seedlings in their own straw bale.  They will return to learn about pests and diseases that can affect their plants and finally, harvest their gourds and pumpkins in late September.  The schedule will be:

Saturday, April 28, 10 a.m. – Overview and planting seeds

Saturday, June 2, 2 p.m. – Planting seedlings

Saturday, July 14, 10 a.m. – Pest and disease discussion

Saturday, September 22, 10 a.m. – Harvesting

This is a great chance for children to get their hands a bit dirty and grow their own pumpkin for the fall.  The program is free and open to 10 children.  Sign up by calling (207) 877-5874.
