ST. GEORGE — The Georges River Land Trust will host Speaking Up for Us (SUFU's) Land Trust Day on June 13 at Langlais Sculpture Preserve. Speaking Up for Us (SUFU), is a statewide organization run by, and for, adults who live with developmental disabilities.

SUFU is committed to finding a voice for its community to "speak up" about issues that are important to all of us, including learning about what land trusts do, what volunteer opportunities exist at land trusts, and in particular, how SUFU members can best prepare for hikes and successfully navigate outdoor experiences on land trust properties. Georges River Land Trust is happy to loan its facilities at Langlais for SUFU to host this important educational day for its members.

Langlais Sculpture Preserve is a 90-acre property in Cushing, formerly the home of renowned Maine artist Bernard Langlais, and his wife, Helen. Amid a dozen massive outdoor sculptures, a ¼ mile ADA pathway, funded by the Maine Recreational Trails Program and installed by OBP (Off the Beaten Path) Trailworks, a trail design and construction company based in Turner, Maine with an emphasis on conservation practices, serves as a model for how land trusts can welcome developmentally disabled adults to their properties, and best accommodate their needs.

Avery Olmstead, Legislative Associate for SUFU and Old Town resident, tested out the pathway before the Land Trust opened Langlais Sculpture Preserve to the public in September 2017.

The Georges River Land Trust is committed to protecting the ecosystems and traditional heritage of the Georges River watershed region and receives 90% of its support from individual donors.
