SWANVILLE — George "Buzz" Martens, 75, died peacefully at his house on Swan Lake in Swanville Oct. 18, 2012 after a short illness. George was born in Roanoke, Va., and was the son of Rosamund (Taylor) and George H. Martens Jr.

After his family moved, he attended Weston High School in Massachusetts and then graduated from Williams College in 1959, when he also married Martha Patterson, who was attending Skidmore College. A year later, their first son, Taylor, was born and three years later, their second son, Greg.

George, known to his family and close friends as Buzz, joined the executive team at Binney and Smith in New York City, which was best known for its Crayola Crayons business. The family lived in Riverside, Conn., but each summer came to Sandy Point in Stockton Springs, where his mother had also summered. While reading Downeast one day back in Connecticut, Buzz saw an ad for an antique refinishing business in Rockport, Maine. He bought the business in 1972, renamed it Yankee Stripper and moved his family to Camden. For the next two and a half decades, Martens and his wife successfully managed the business, where he was known as an excellent furniture refinisher, precise and honest, and respected for his artist's eye. After selling the business, they opened Antique Treasures in Rockport.

Buzz loved boating on Penobscot Bay and on Megunitcook Lake, where the family owned a house, and in the Florida Keys during winter vacations. In addition to his collection of antique Ford Mustang cars, which he faithfully washed each week, he also loved listening to Louis Armstrong and other Dixieland jazz greats, whose records he played every Sunday.

Martens is survived by Martha Martens, his former wife and best friend; a sister, Sandra Baker of Searsport; two sons, Taylor and his wife, Christine Martens, and Greg Martens; his grandchildren, Drew, Douglas and Madelaine Martens, and his nieces and nephews, Lori Gauvin and Douglas, Michael and Kate McDunnah.
