Fundraiser for Sam Clark kicks off at Camden Amphitheatre with Just Teachers

CAMDEN — Sixteen-year-old Sam Clark of Rockport has been living with severe dilated cardiomyopathy, caused by a flu virus he contracted as a newborn. He is facing a grim future without a heart transplant, because DCM adversely affects the heart's ability to pump blood because the heart's main pumping chamber -- the left ventricle -- is enlarged and weakened.

Over time, that weakness can affect the other chambers of the heart, weakening them as well.

But Sam and his family are hopeful. You can see that in the smile on his face. And Sam's family is hoping that a heart transplant will put him on a better path, and that he will be able to live and do many things in life that he has never been able to do because of his condition.

Sam's mother, Cathy Clark, started a GoFundMe campaign less than a month ago, with a goal to raise $20,000 to help defray mounting costs associated with Sam’s increasing visits to the hospital. There are also the costs to travel between Rockport and Boston, Mass., and his parents' lost time from work to support him as the health of his heart continues to decline. There will be more costs, including followup visits out of state, if and when he gets a new heart.

"We are grateful beyond words, for the amazing care and medical management he has received all these years, which has allowed him to be at home and living a relatively normal life," said Cathy on Sam's GoFundMe webpage. "His heart has recently deteriorated, to the point where he will require a new heart. Sam's heart failure management, and eventually receiving the gift of a new heart, will require more frequent hospitalizations and out of state doctors’ visits."

In just 25 days, $14,192 of the family's $20,000 goal has been raised, but it's likely Sam and his family will need considerably more than that to get over this major bump in the road.

To continue the fundraising, the Clark Family will be in attendance at a benefit concert for Sam on Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 5 to 9 p.m. (Rain date Wednesday, Aug. 20.)

The concert will be held outdoors at the Camden Amphitheatre, and local rock band Just Teachers will be performing. Just Teachers includes Lucas Benner, Adam Bullard, Piet Lammert, Ian McKenzie and Matt Smith.

The community is invited to gather for this free event (donations appreciated) and bring a picnic dinner, a blanket or lawn chairs and join in the fun for the best cause of all – a second chance at life.
