ROCKPORT — Friedrich J. Bormann, 100, passed away March 28, 2015, at the Sussman House. Friedrich was born Sept. 22, 1914, to Friedrich and Sophie (Luhrs) Bormann in Lehesterdeich, Germany. He attended local schools in Germany.

In 1941, he married his sweetheart, Hanna Schumacher. They raised their four children: Manfred, Friedrich, Rolf and Renate, together. He was also the vice president of the German Society. He was very proud of his German roots and ancestry. In 1955 the family immigrated to New York.

Friedrich was a skilled carpenter and enjoyed playing many different musical instruments. He also enjoyed attending dances with his wife, especially dancing the polka together. He was always a joy to be around and had a contagious smile. Friedrich enjoyed playing the accordion, piano, violin and harmonica. He liked to be able to put on a show for others and seeing others dancing and having a good time to his music.

In 1997 Friedrich and his family moved to Maine. He became very well known around town for his laughter, great stories and kind gentle spirit, and also for his distinguished German accent. He regularly attended the First Baptist Church in Waldoboro, and he became very well known in the church for his kindness and love. Friedrich was known to grow amazing, beautiful and full dahlia flowers in his gardens. He was best known around town as “Papa Chocolate.” He always had little candy chocolates in his pockets and would hand out candy to children. He loved to see the smile on their faces when he would hand the children chocolates. He was deeply loved by his family and grandchildren. Friedrich enjoyed being around his grandchildren and seeing them smile and laugh, especially when he would sneak them an extra chocolate or two.

Friedrich was a resident at Winward Gardens the last few years of his life. He enjoyed meeting new people and sharing in stories and laughter together. He was also known to play his harmonica and still put on a show for other residents and friends.

Friedrich's favorite quote was "The first hundred years are the toughest." It's amazing and extraordinary that he lived by this quote and lived to see 100 fun filled and exciting years.

Friedrich was predeceased by his wife, Hanna Bormann in 1999; his sons, Manfred Bormann in 1997 and Rolf Bormann in 2007. He is survived by his son, Friedrich Bormann of Gulfport, Mich.; his daughter, Renate Crosby of Jefferson; and many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great great-grandchildren; and family and friends.

Hall's of Waldoboro has care of the arrangements.
