ROCKLAND — Floyd E. Young Sr., 74, died unexpected Aug. 3, 2014, at his home in Rockland.

Born April 10, 1940, he was the son of Clyde and Ilene Nye Young. Educated locally, he was a 1958 graduate of Rockland High School.

Following high school Floyd went to work for Van Baalens. For more than 20 years he was a dedicated employee, continuing with the company as it changed to Nautica. Later, Floyd worked at School House Togs, eventually retiring from there.

Floyd is remembered for his green thumbs. He loved gardening and could grow anything. He also took great joy in target shooting, always challenging himself to become better at the sport.

He was an accomplished artist who taught himself to play guitar and wrote many songs. He also completed several oil paintings, and especially enjoyed painting nautical and nature scenes.

Floyd was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Cleo Young, Clyde Young Jr. and Loren Young Trahon; and a sister, Ilene Young. He is survived by his first wife, Opal Miller; his second wife, Judith Carlson; his sons, Floyd E. Young Jr. and his wife, Laurie, of Rockland, Michael Young and his wife, Amy, and Rodney Young and his wife, Tina, of Sarasota, Fla.; his brothers, George Young and his wife, Dorothea, of Rockland, and John Young Sr. and his wife, Kay Burgess, of Rockland; five grandchildren, Alexander and Benjamin Young of Thomaston, Amber Jean Young of Florida, Jody Young and Amanda Hamblen; his great-grandchildren, Samantha, Sarah and Johnny; as well as several nieces and nephews, including Sharon Mariner, Donald Young, John Young Jr., Alden Young and James Snyder.

A service of remembrance will be held Monday, Aug. 11 at 1 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home. The Rev. Walden Chandler will officiate. Interment will follow at Ocean View Cemetery in South Thomaston.
