ROCKPORT — New Work by Faculty, an exhibition of furniture, turned objects, carving and sculpture in wood, has opened for the summer at the Messler Gallery of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport. The exhibition runs now through Sept. 16.

Unusual for a gallery setting is a vintage 1981 Honda Goldwing motorcycle customized by wood sculptor Stephen Gleasner. Being a longtime rider and capable mechanic, Gleasner has replaced standardized fenders and other components with one-of-a-kind sculpted plywood parts. The Goldwing model, according to Gleasner, was never meant to be the "domesticated pack animal" it has become, and he has done his best to "express the bike in its perfect form."

All 24 makers represented in the exhibition are current-year instructors at the Center. They come from as far away as New Zealand and England, and as close by as Camden and Rockland. Their work is stylistically diverse, as befits a school with a teaching philosophy that encourages each student to find his or her own creative voice.

International exhibitors in New Work by Faculty include: Adrian Ferrazzutti (Canada), David Haig (New Zealand), Aled Lewis (Wales), and Chris Pye (England). Exhibitors from across the U.S. include: John Beaver (Pacific Palisades, Calif.), Warren Carpenter (Seneca, S.C.), Mark Gardner (Saluda, N.C.), Keith Gotschall (Salida, Colo.), Garrett Hack (Thetford Center, Vt.), Reed Hansuld (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Beth Ireland (Roslindale, Mass.), Yuri Kobayashi (Westport Point, Mass.), Brian Persico (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) and Dino Sanchez (New York City). Participants from Maine include: Aaron Fedarko (Camden), Stephen Gleasner (Appleton), Kenneth Kortemeier (Bristol), Jim Macdonald (Burnham), Mason McBrien (Union), Isabella Pierson (Rockland), Mac Ray (Damariscotta), Brian Reid (Rockland), Adam Rogers (Auburn) and Tim Rousseau (Appleton).

Messler Gallery summer hours Monday through Friday are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is located on the campus of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, at the corner of Route 90 and Mill Street in Rockport.
