NORTH HAVEN — Evan David Hopkins, 20, died unexpectedly from injuries sustained in an automobile accident March 26, 2013.

Born in Rockport May 2, 1992, he was the son of Eric and Janice Smith MacDonald Hopkins. Evan attended North Haven Community School and was a 2010 graduate of NHCS and Mid-Coast School of Technology.

Evan was a happy-go-lucky, non-conforming, sharp-witted and exceptional individual. At age 7 he was working the cash register and helping out at Brown's Market, where he enjoyed the camaraderie and developed many friendships. From that point on his circle of friends just grew.

He threw himself into everything that captured his interest, and quickly became skilled at anything he put his mind to. He particularly enjoyed collecting, working on and driving mid 1980s GMC and Chevy trucks and was proud of his collection of parts and pieces to assist in that endeavor. Evan said early on that one of his goals in life was to own and operate a junkyard. At age 20 he had a good start toward accomplishing that goal.

Evan's primary job was sterning for his brother, Jason, aboard the Family Tradition. When not lobstering together, he was Jason's right hand man on many other jobs. They were an inseparable and often comical duo. Recently, Evan was working part time as a mechanic for Phil Marquis, owner of PM Automotive on North Haven.

Family and friends will remember Evan as a hard worker who lived life fully and in the moment.

Along with his mother, Janice of North Haven, his father, Eric and his partner, Elisa Wike Hurley of Mount Desert Island, Evan is survived by two brothers, Ian Hopkins and his girlfriend, Myra McClure, and Jason MacDonald and his fiancée, Laura Barrett, of North Haven; two sisters, Eva Hopkins of Rockland and Jessica MacDonald Martin and her husband, Daniel, of Vinalhaven; his maternal grandmother, Freda Smith of North Haven; his paternal grandmother, June Hopkins of Rockland and North Haven; his aunts and uncles, Judy and Charles Fearing of Union, Lynn and Bill Peters of Cushing, Roy Smith of North Haven, Will and Elizabeth Hopkins of Eastport, David Hopkins and his partner, David Wilson, of North Haven, and Thomas Hopkins of North Haven and Whiting; his nieces, Gina MacDonald, and Casey and Chrissy Martin; his nephew, Chayse MacDonald; and several cousins and many close friends. Evan had a special relationship with Chayse and Gina who were like siblings to him.

A celebration of Evan's life will be held Saturday, April 6, at 11 a.m. at North Haven Baptist Church. The Rev. David Macy will officiate. Transportation will be provided between Vinalhaven and North Haven beginning at 10:30 a.m. A reception will be held following the service at Hopkins Wharf Gallery, located adjacent to the ferry parking lot. The family is collecting stories and photos of Evan from his friends at EvanHopkinsTribute@gmail.com, for those who have something to share.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
