ROCKPORT — Ethel Isabelle Holloway Hoppe, 99, passed quietly April 15, 2013, after a short stay at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta recovering from hip surgery.

Born in Kingfield Feb. 9, 1914, she was the daughter of Harry and Sarah Douglas Holloway. She married Wheaton Hoppe in Livermore Falls Nov. 25, 1939.

Ethel loved her family and her greatest joy was taking care of them; especially the children. While she never had a driver's license, her family would joke that a car never left the dooryard without her wanting to be in it and on the go. She loved shopping, taking road trips, attending plays at CHRHS and flying around the country with her granddaughter. She was always willing to try new things, go to new places and got a laugh out of being photographed while doing something silly. An avid reader, she also enjoyed country and western music, loved to cook and her home and kitchen were always open to family who stopped by. Ethel was a former Sunday school teacher and member of the West Rockport Baptist Church, where she attended services every week until she was no longer able to do so.

Predeceased by her brother, Douglas Holloway; two sisters, Kay Copp and Frances Brown; and her husband, Wheaton Hoppe; Ethel is survived by her son, Robert Hoppe and his fiancée, Joan Banden, of Rockport; her sister, Pearl Pinkham of Damariscotta; her brother, Jim Douglas and his wife, Alice, of Portland; four grandchildren, Bobbi Start and her husband, Dana, of Dana Point, Calif., Penny Hoppe and Greg Eaton of Rockport, Kelly Benson and her husband, Donald, of Lincolnville, and Michael Hoppe and his wife, Lori, of Hope; seven great-grandchildren, Tobias Lawry and his wife, Christine, Heather Whitney and her husband, Wayne McAtee, Sara Whitney and her friend, Brian Boody, Joshua Benson and his wife, Kirsty, Jammi Benson, Dani Hoppe and Tyler Hoppe; 11 great great-grandchildren, Helena Lawry, Caleb Whitney, Carson Whitney, Owen McAtee, Natasha Curit, Madison Bission, Sean Benson, Emma Benson, Brandon Benson, Brooke Benson, and Benjamin Benson; and her beloved cat, Precious.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Thursday, April 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A celebration of Ethel's life will be held Friday, April 19, at 2 p.m. at the West Rockport Baptist Church on Park Street. Private family interment will be in Seaview Cemetery in Rockport.
