Elizabeth Mary Leibman, obituary

Elizabeth Mary Leibman, 91, of Waldoboro, died June 19, 2014 after a sudden brief illness at Cove's Edge in Damariscotta, Maine. She was born April 20, 1923, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Elizabeth (Lang) and Charles Leibman. She lived in Jamaica, New York, until 1941. Elizabeth graduated from high school, School of Industrial Arts, Manhattan, New York, in 1941.

On Dec. 7, 1943, she joined the Navy and was a WAVE in World War II. She was stationed in Washington, D.C., processing war photos. She was discharged from the Navy, Jan. 16, 1946 as a Specialist 3rd Class.

Elizabeth held various jobs after the Navy. She and her friend, Barbara Hastie, co-owned a graphic design business, Heffenon, Hastie and Leibman. She and Barbara lived in a an old farmhouse in Lake Katrine, New York.

Elizabeth summered in Maine for many years and moved to Waldoboro permanently in 2005. Elizabeth loved Maine for "its sky, fields, and the people.”

She enjoyed birds, especially seagulls, nature, the ocean, full moons, going to her favorite restaurants for lunch, reading, and had many beloved cats in her lifetime, the most recent being Kisa. She loved birthday celebrations, Christmas tree-trimming parties and holidays with her caregivers and their families. Elizabeth also had a wonderful sense of humor.

She was predeceased by her parents; brother William Wall; and friend Barbara Hastie. Elizabeth is survived by her brother, John Wall, of Toms River, New Jersey; six nieces and nephews; and 11 great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two special caregivers of the last six years who were family to her, Karen Sawyer, of Warren, and Pam Trahan, of Waldoboro, and their extended families and many dear friends.

A graveside service will be held at Dutch Neck Cemetery in Waldoboro, July 3, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in Elizabeth's memory to the Waldoboro Public Library, P.O. Box 768, Waldoboro, ME 04572; Pope Memorial Humane Society of Know County, 17 Buttermilk Lane, Thomaston, ME 04861; or to Lincoln County Animal Shelter, 27 Atlantic Hwy, Edgecomb, ME 04556.
