SPRUCE HEAD — Elizabeth Till Earl, 94, died peacefully July 4, 2014, in her home.

Born Aug. 28, 1919, in Swampscott, Mass., she was the daughter of Raymond Coombs and Ruth Sleeper Till.

Ms. Earl graduated from Rockland High School in 1935 and was a player on the 1935 Lady Tigers state champion basketball team. She went on to attend secretarial school and graduated from Boston School of Dental Nursing in 1938.

In 1942 she married N. C. Earl III and spent 23 years as a military wife stationed all over the world in places like Turkey, Okinawa and several U.S. states.

Known locally as “Libby” Earl, she served as treasurer of the Spruce Head Community Club for 33 years, and was a town selectman for South Thomaston. She was an avid golfer throughout her life and even trained as alternate for the Olympic ski team in her younger years.

Affectionately known as “Nanny” by her family, she will be sadly missed and forever loved, remembered and admired for being an outspoken, strong, caring and loving pillar of the Earl family.

Predeceased by her sister, Virginia Torney, Ms. Earl is survived by her siblings, Robert Till and Marilynn Campbell. Ms. Earl spent 47 happy years married to the love of her life, Noble Clarkson Earl III, before his death in 1989. She is survived by her two sons, Noble C. Earl IV of Norfolk, Va., and John E. Earl of Spruce Head; nine grandchildren, Tammy Earl, Jefferey Earl, Amber Landre, Andrew T. Earl, Elizabeth Black, David Earl, Jake Earl, Chris Earl and Jada Earl; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life Saturday, July 19 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Spruce Head Community Hall, 30 Village Road in Spruce Head.
