Elaine Nutter: Reaction the SAD 28 referendum vote

Wed, 02/11/2015 - 11:00am

I am obviously disappointed, as I believe the referendum and comprehensive plan for Camden Rockport Middle School, the Mary E. Taylor building and the bus barn addressed all of the immediate facility needs of the two districts in a coordinated and, in the long run, the most fiscally responsible manner. I am most disappointed for the students and staff who will continue for the foreseeable future to work in a building that is inadequate, and in some respects, substandard.

That being said, I fully support the role of the democratic process in public education, and recognize that the will of the majority of voters is what ultimately sets the direction for school districts. I also am particularly empathetic to the plight of property tax payers who are being squeezed from all directions.

The SAD 28 School Board will need to review the outcome of the referendum and continue to seek wide input as they draft alternative plans for the middle school, as doing nothing to Camden Rockport Middle School is not a responsible option.

The Five Town CSD will also need to review the facility needs for its Zenith secondary alternative education program, administrative offices, and adult education day learning center.

The SAD 28 Board will start that process at the SAD 28 monthly meeting, held in the CRMS cafeteria Feb. 11, at 7 p.m..

Every board meeting has an opportunity for public input, and we welcome public and staff participation as we go back to the drawing board.
