ST. GEORGE — Edgar N. Darby, 87, died July 1, 2014, at Windward Gardens in Camden, following a brief illness.

Born in Boston, Mass., on March 19, 1927, he was the son of the Rev. Arthur E. and Mary O. Sangster Darby. During his childhood, Mr. Darby lived in Connecticut, where his father served as a pastor. The Darby family moved to Lisbon Falls, where he graduated from Lisbon High School, Class of 1945. He immediately entered the United States Army and after basic training served with the 503rd Military Police Battalion in Florence, Italy. Upon honorable discharge from the military, he returned to his Lisbon Falls home.

Mr. Darby was a graduate of Bates College in Lewiston and also received a masters degree from Boston University.

On June 26, 1948 he married Corinne M. Kinney in Lisbon Falls. The couple made their home there, where they raised their family until moving to St. George in 1993.

Most of his career, he served as a consultant with the Maine Department of Special Education, retiring in 1983.

Mr. Darby had long enjoyed fishing, boating, recreational travel and was involved in various hobbies.

He was a member of the Port Clyde Baptist Church.

On June 26 he celebrated 66 years of marriage with his wife, family and friends.

Along with his parents, Mr. Darby was predeceased by a sister, Esther Lacoste. Besides his beloved wife, Corinne of St. George, he is survived by three children, Gary Darby and his wife, Sherry, of Rockland, Gayle Houston and her husband, Alan, of Topsham, and Glenn Darby and his wife, Lori, of Durham; a sister, Margaret Persons of Manchester, N.H.; a brother, Douglas Darby of Sutton, Mass.; six grandchildren, Eric Darby, Lauren Darby Zike and her husband, Nathaniel, Scott Houston, Melissa Lemont and her husband, Joseph, Kristi Darby and Taylor Darby; two great-grandchildren, Connor and Emma; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service, with military honors, will be held Sunday, July 20 at 2 p.m. at Port Clyde Baptist Church on Port Clyde Road. The Rev. Stephen Maxwell will officiate.
