ROCKLAND – Oceanside girls varsity hosted Camden Hills Monday night in a game originally scheduled for Tuesday, but moved up because of the forecasted storm. However for Oceanside the storm came early as the Windjammers sailed from behind the entire night until 6:14 in the fourth quarter when they took the lead and held on for the dramatic 50-46 win.

This was the second meeting of the two teams with the Windjammers winning the first game by 2-points, 56-54. Camden Hills goes to 11-4 on the season while Oceanside falls to 10-5.

After an 11-3 first quarter run in the first quarter, Oceanside continued to a 14-3 run before Camden Hills Rachel Pease took over in the second quarter coming off the bench to score all 11 points the Windjammers put on the board giving Oceanside a 26-14 lead at the half time break. By the End of the third quarter Camden Hills had cut the lead to 2-points with the Mariners leading 35-33.

Camden Hills started the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to tie the score for the first time at 6:25 and take the lead 37-35 at 6:14. Oceanside’s Payton Billingsley got fouled going to the basket with about 5 minutes left and after missing her first, made the second to make it 41-36 to break the Windjammers run.

Oceanside closed the score to 48-46 with 10.7 seconds left on the clock when she made a pair of foul shots. With no choice but to toulon the inbounds Camden Hills Hannah Wincklhofer went to the foul line where she calmly made both foul shots to give the Windjammers the 50-46 win as time ran out.

Pease led all scorers with 19 points for the Windjammers; Charlotte Messer had nine; Wincklhofer eight; Eliza Boetsch and Maddie Bowman six each; and Mara Dostie two.

The Windjammers were 14-of-23 (61 percent) from the foul line. In a rare exception the Windjammers did not have a three point basket.

Along with her 19 points Pease was a monster on the boards and had a few amazing blocks.

“Rachel was crazy, some of those blocks she had blew me away,” said coach Meg Cressler. “Plus carrying us that second quarter,”

For Oceanside, Makenna Brooks had a team high 14 points; Billingsley had 13; Ashley Gardner eight; Caitlin Raye four; Jillian Brooks, Kaylee McCorrison and Brianna Dugan two each; and Alexis Davis one.

Camden Hills was 10-of-15 (67 percent) from the foul line and they knocked down four 3-pointers, two each from M. Brooks and Billingsley.

Next up for the Windjammers they are scheduled to host Belfast Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. For the Mariners, they will host their last home game when Erskine Academy of So. China comes to town Friday, Jan. 30 for a 6:30 p.m. tip off.
