CAMDEN — Dr. Robert Scott Furman, 82, died April 29, 2018 at his home in Camden, surrounded by his wife and children.

Bob was born in Evansville, Indiana, July 5, 1935 to Victor Eugene and Eleanor Scott Furman. He grew up in Geneva, Illinois, where he graduated from Geneva High School in 1953 before attending Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. It was in the choir his junior year at Lawrence that he met the woman who would become his wife, Barbara Fieweger. They were married in July, 1958, and Bob started medical school at University of Pittsburgh that same summer.

Upon completing medical school and internship, Bob served as a general medical officer at Madigan Army Medical Center, Fort Lewis, Washington. Following two years of service he started his medical residency in Syracuse, New York, before moving his family to Camden to open the area's first orthopedic practice in 1969.

Bob was a lifelong music lover. His parents took him to many live concerts during his youth and instilled a deep love and knowledge of classical music. He was an avid sailor, learning how to sail the first year he moved to Camden and purchasing his first boat a year later. There were few things he enjoyed more than sailing the waters of Penobscot Bay on his boat, Lenity. In 1983, he and the family sailed their 38-foot boat in the Marion-to-Bermuda Cruising Boat Race. Several years later, in 1988, he and Barbara with a small crew sailed Lenity to Ireland, spending summers exploring the Irish and Scottish coasts before returning Lenity to Maine in 1991.

Bob loved working with his hands, whether building furniture or repairing everything from chairs to outboard engines. He often mused that if he hadn't become an orthopedic surgeon he would have been happy as a carpenter. He was a gentle, patient man and quiet mentor to many. The things that brought him most pleasure in recent years were poetry, music, a good single malt scotch and watching and identifying the birds and wildlife in the garden.

He was a cradle Episcopalian and a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church for 48 years, sitting on various committees and volunteering as an usher. He also served as Senior Warden for a number of years.

He served on the board of Pen Bay Medical Center and was president of the medical board when Pen Bay opened in 1975. After retiring, Bob enjoyed a few years working for the Maine State Medical Disability Review Board.

Bob is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Barbara Furman; four children: Anne Furman Cassity and husband, Mark, of Greensboro, North Carolina; Cynthia Furman Selinger and husband, Cito, of Freeport; Jeffrey Furman and wife, Kelly, of Wilmington, Delaware; and Sarah Furman and husband, Geoffrey Smith, of Portland. He was adored by eight grandchildren: Liza Cassity, Molly Cassity, Emily Selinger, Hallie Selinger, Peter Furman, Elizabeth Furman, Avery Smith and Ellie Smith.

He was predeceased by his mother and father, Eleanor and Victor Furman, and a daughter, Kathleen.

A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church of Camden, June 16, at 2 p.m.
