ST. GEORGE — Dorothy Phillips, 87, passed peacefully on June 14, 2016, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, surrounded by her loving family. There will be a happy reunion when Dorothy joins her husband, Phil, her daughter, Linda, her son, Randy, and her brother, John Lantz, at God's Golden Gate.

Born in Tenants Harbor on June 14, 1929, she was the daughter of John and Saimi Lantz, she lived there until the family moved to Long Cove. Dorothy attended schools in Tenants Harbor and graduated from St. George High School in 1947. In 1948 she married Philip F. Phillips. The couple lived in East Hartford, Conn., for a short time, before returning to Maine.

During the summers, while in high school and after, she worked in the Port Clyde Packing Factory and also at packing factories in Rockland. For more than 30 years she served as head cook in the St. George School system. She enjoyed being with all the young children. After retiring, she often saw students who had eaten, and loved, her hot lunches. They always enjoyed stopping to chat.

She would stop every day on the way home from work to have coffee with her mother and watch one of the soap operas. For many years she took her mother in town every Saturday to shop.

She enjoyed keeping a bird feeder in her front yard. Keeping that feeder filled and chasing the squirrels away was a task that kept Dot very busy. She also had a collection of elephant figures. She was a longtime member of Tenants Harbor Baptist Church, where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school, working on church suppers and helping with the Vacation Bible School program.

For many years Dorothy lived in the house that her grandfather had previously owned. They then moved to Smally Town on the hill, into the house that her husband had built. She remained there until she became ill and went to live at the Homestead in Owls Head. At the time of her death she was a resident at Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Dorothy is survived by two sisters, Gertrude Smith of Hollis Center and Ruth Achille of Merritt Island, Fla.; two grandchildren, Jenny Crute of Newburgh and Debbie Crute of New York; her sister-in-law, Pauline “Polly” Lantz of Port Clyde; as well as nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 21, at 2 p.m. at Seaside Cemetery in Tenants Harbor. The Rev. Randall Thissell will officiate.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home.
