CAMDEN — David Hugh Montgomery passed away Dec. 8, 2012, at Quarry Hill in Camden. He was born June 17, 1928, and was the son of J. Hugh Montgomery and Helen Greene Montgomery. David was educated in the Camden school system. He graduated from Exeter Academy in 1946 and from Harvard University in 1950, where he was in the Navy ROTC program. David completed graduate school at Stanford University Business School, graduating in 1952.

In 1953, while working in San Francisco, he met Ann Stuart. They were married at Grace Cathedral and shortly thereafter, returned to Camden when David's father died.

David took over his father's business, the Allen Agency, an insurance and real estate firm, which he owned and operated until his retirement in the 1990s. At that time he turned the business into an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (employee-owned business) and turned the management over to his eldest daughter, Sara, and two partners.

Since 1954, he had been a member and past president of the Camden Rotary Club. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and Honorary Member of the Rotary International Yachting Society. He also served on the Douglas A. Thom Memorial Corporation Board of Directors.

David's other memberships included the Camden Yacht Club; the Megunticook Golf Club; MSAD 28 School Board (1970s); as a trustee of Thomas College; a member of The Camden Public Library Foundation; the Penobscot Bay YMCA; and past president of the Camden Snow Bowl.

During the 1970s, David served as a board member of the committee that planned the merger of the Knox County General Hospital and the Camden Community Hospital, creating Penobscot Bay Medical Center.

From 1966 to 1998, he served on the board of directors of Camden National Bank and was chairman of the doard for 22 years.

He was an owner and partner in Wayfarer Marine and started Allen Development Corporation, which is now Maine Coast Construction Inc.

A member of the American Field Service, David and Ann hosted an exchange student, Muyesser Selay, from Izmir, Turkey.

He was one of the original supporters of Bay Chamber Concerts.

David was a skier at the Camden Snow Bowl and Sugarloaf, from their earliest days.

He loved sailing the waters of Penobscot Bay, hiking through many parts of the world, and biking the Camden Hills and along the shores of Megunticook Lake. David enjoyed reading American history and mountaineering books.

He was a life-long communicant of St.Thomas Episcopal Church in Camden and in 2009, the town of Camden dedicated the Annual Report to David and Ann.

David is survived by his loving wife, Ann; his three daughters, Sara Montgomery, Lee Montgomery and her husband, John Grose, and Holly Rutland and her husband, Jim Rutland; his granddaughter, Eve Greene Marden; his brother, Philip Montgomery and his wife, Alison; several nieces, nephews and cousins and many, many friends.

David and Ann have spent their lives together in the homestead at 30 High St. in Camden, which was built in 1802 and dates back six generations. This home is on The National Register of Historic Districts. Camden has offered them a very full and wonderful life together.

After 17 years of Parkinson's disease, David resided at The Gardens at Quarry Hill in Camden, where he received exceptional care. Quarry Hill is part of Penobscot Bay Medical Center. David devoted his life to this small coastal Maine town.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 31, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 33 Chestnut St. in Camden with the Rev. John Rafter officiating.
