ROCKPORT — Daniel Stephen Boobar ("Dan" to his friends) died peacefully at Quarry Hill Dec. 5, 2012. He was born May 23, 1942, in Medford, Mass., to Erma L. (Steeves) and Lester L. Boobar of Waterville. He lived his entire life in Maine, moving from Bangor to Waterville and then Portland, where he graduated from Deering High School in 1958. He attended the University of Maine-Orono and graduated with a degree in engineering in 1964. He met his future wife, Jean Woods, while there, and in 1965 they were married in Kittery. The newlyweds moved to the Midcoast, living first in Thomaston and then in Rockport (with a one-year stay in Camden while building their new home).

Dan worked for more than 30 years at FMC Corp. in Rockland as a mechanical engineer charged with overseeing large-scale improvements to the production line and environmental impact. As part of his work, he traveled extensively, most significantly to the Philippines, where he supervised construction of a new seaweed processing plant.

In 1978, he earned an MBA from the University of Maine. As a life-long learner, he also studied history, and spent many hours volunteering with the Rockland Historical Society. His special project there was accurate mapping and planning for a scale model recreation of the old railroad line. In addition to his interest in local history, he also read extensively on archaeology, with particular attention to the ancient Near East.

His many interests included science fiction literature, music, downhill skiing, stock car racing, and furniture refinishing. He loved Maine, and spent ample time outdoors, at the family cottage in Ocean Park, the woodlot in Searsmont, Ragged Mountain in Camden, and in the backyards of his homes.

Dan was beloved by his friends and family for his quirky sense of humor, his intellectual curiosity and most especially, because of his deep and abiding affection for all of them. He is survived by his wife Jean; his children. Jennifer (Boobar) Pachon and her husband, Marc, Matthew Boobar and his wife, Katheryn [Mitchell] Boobar, and Jeremiah Boobar; his grandchildren, Alexander and Bellana Pachon; and his brother, J. Robert Boobar. He was also a beloved uncle and "gruncle" to his many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Smith, Nancy Rearick and her husband, Daniel, and Dena Randall and her husband, Jack. Dan was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Kessler, in 2012.

A memorial service followed by a reception will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m. at John Street United Methodist Church in Camden.
