ROCKLAND — Conrad H. “Wink” Winchenbaugh Sr., 87, died May 5, 2016, at his daughter's home in Litchfield, following an extended illness.

Born in Rockland on Nov. 8, 1928, he was the son of Basil V. and Doris M. Burrows Winchenbaugh. He attended a one-room school house on Bog Road.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps, World War II veteran.

On Feb. 5, 1948, Wink married Mary E. Walker in Rockland. The couple made their home in Rockland all their married lives, where they raised a family of six boys and six girls.

As a self-employed landscaper all of his career, Wink created immaculate lawns and gardens for many area homes and properties. Upon building the new Rockland Congregational Church, which was completed in 1965, Wink designed and installed the landscaping, which he maintained more than 52 years until retiring due to ill health in 2015. He prided himself in doing things the “right way,” mowing all his lawns, including the church, with a walk behind mower. He never liked the look of a lawn mowed with a rider.

More than anything, he enjoyed being with family and at large family gatherings that included the in-laws and everyone. He loved camping and fishing, particularly at Lake St. George, and going for Sunday rides. He was a very kind and generous person, who put the needs of others ahead of his own, frequently stopping to chat with people and always asking after family members, giving what little he had to someone he thought needed it more.

For many years he was interested in and followed local politics, penning many well thought out and eloquent letters to the editor in the local newspaper.

Wink was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary in 2001; and a son, Paul E. Winchenbaugh Sr. in 2010; as well as a brother, Albert Winchenbaugh; and a sister, Louise Hooper.

He is survived by five sons, Conrad Winchenbaugh Jr. and his wife, Bonny, of Rockland, Dale Winchenbaugh and his companion, Lucena, of Somerville, Joel Winchenbaugh and his wife, Linda, of Manchester, N.H., Kevin Winchenbaugh and his companion, Farrah Fortier, and Brett X. Winchenbaugh and his wife, Amy, of Union; a daughter-in-law, Judy Winchenbaugh of Rockland; six daughters, Donna Cross of Rockland, Carol Keller and her husband, Charles, of Damariscotta, Vicki Winchenbaugh and her husband, Tom Pellitier, of Litchfield, Pam Miller of Hope, Kristi Rich of Rockland and Lisa Kenney of North Conway, N.H.; one sister, Linda Campbell of Rockport; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at Achorn Cemetery on Old County Road in Rockland. The Rev. Seth D. Jones will officiate. A reception will follow in Kimball Hall at Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock St. in Rockland.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Honor Flight Maine, honorflightmaine.org.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home.
