SPRUCE HEAD — Clyde E. Drinkwater, 64, died during the week of Nov. 23, 2014, of natural causes at his home.

Born in Rockland on Oct. 5, 1950, he was the son of Kenneth L. and Margaret Norman Drinkwater. Growing up in Spruce Head, he attended South Thomaston and Rockland schools. He was a 1968 graduate of Rockland District High School. That summer he worked at the former Rockland Auto Supply on Park Street, until enlisting in the United States Navy.

After basic training at Naval Station Great Lakes, Clyde's first assignment was to Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas. He was then transferred to Norfolk, Va., where he served as a jet engine mechanic aboard the USS Ranger. He later served aboard ships in Japan and Vietnam. Clyde was proud to be serving aboard the USS John F. Kennedy on its maiden voyage. He also served on the USS Forrestal and USS Nimitz. Clyde achieved the rank of chief boatswains mate and was honorably discharged after 12 years' service.

Returning to civilian life, he began employment as a diesel mechanic, with Uno R. Ilvonen Earth Moving Contractors in Owls Head, and continued in that position after the sale of that business to Jake Barbour.

He particularly enjoyed his position as crew chief with the Uno Ilvonen Drag Race Team.

For several years Clyde resided with the Ilvonen family, where the children considered him as a second father.

Clyde is remembered as a unique individual with a keen mind. He was self-taught and could instantly recall anything he read. He enjoyed the camaraderie of his many friends.

In addition to his parents, Clyde was predeceased by one nephew, Ryan Burch, in 1989. He is survived by a brother, Alan N. Drinkwater and his wife, Diane, of Owls Head; two sisters, Patricia M. Burch and Karen W. Thompson and her husband, Peter; and two nephews, Craig A. Thompson and Daniel E. Burch, all of Spruce Head; as well as extended family and friends.

In keeping with Clyde's ability to often allude friends and family for extended periods, no service detail will be announced.
