CHRHS sailing claims state championship

CASTINE — The Camden Hills Regional High School sailing team won the Maine State Championship Sunday, May 14 at the Maine Maritime Academy.  

The Championship was combined with the Down East Invitational Regatta with 20 teams competing.

Saturday the wind blew from the east around 10 knots eventually shifting to the south. The leads changed among the teams through out the day ending with first, second, third and fourth teams all in the running.

Eight races for each division were completed on Saturday.

Of the six teams vying for the Maine State Championship two teams were tied at the end of the day, with two more teams within points of the top teams.

Sunday's weather forecast was for northeast winds gusting up to 25 knots by noon, the race committee decided to run one set of races for each division. 10 races, one for each division, were completed for the series.

The first place finish for the Down East Invitational Regatta was decided by five points with Tabor Academy winning, Belmont Hill School finishing second and Camden Hills placing third.

The Maine State Championship came down to a head-to-head tie breaker decided by the team that had most first place finishes. Camden Hills won the tie-breaker with Mt. Desert Island placing second and Yarmouth High School finishing third.

The Apprentice Shop will be hosting the Hospice Team Racing Regatta, Saturday, May 20 in Rockland Harbor. Local high schools will be competing as a fundraiser for Hospice. The public is encouraged to come out support the teams and see what team racing is all about.
