BELFAST — Catherine Lassen Alling, 100, died March 25, 2014 at Waldo County General Hospital in the hospice unit. She was born Aug. 10, 1913, in Braintree, Mass., was the daughter of Max Morton and Eva Alden (Robbins) Lassen and lived in Searsmont. Her maternal grandparents were Frank and Mary (Knight) Robbins and her paternal grandparents were Victor Christian and Catherine (Schouboe) Lassen.

The Lassen family moved to Wethersfield, Conn., where Catherine graduated from Wethersfield High School.

On June 19, 1937, Catherine married Morton David Alling Jr. of West Hartford, Conn., the son of Morton David Alling Sr. and Mary Alling.

Catherine lived in West Hartford with her husband and family. She remained in West Hartford after her husband Morton passed. Catherine moved back to Belfast nine years ago, residing at the Residence of Tall Pines.

While living in West Hartford, Catherine worked as executive secretary at Maritz Corporation; was a Cub Scout den leader; a charter member, secretary and former president of the West Hartford Dames; and was secretary of the Bushy Hill Field Trials Club. While spending summers in Maine, Catherine served as secretary while her husband was treasurer of the Quantabacook Lake Association. She was also a member of the Waldo County General Hospital Aid for decades; an associate member of the First Congregational Church of Searsport and member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational of West Hartford.

When Catherine and Mort retired, they built a green house on the back of their home. It was filled with flowering plants during the winter months, which were replanted every spring into their beautiful gardens.

Having traveled extensively throughout Europe, Catherine and Mort cruised the Caribbean Islands many times and across the United States and Canada by train, plane and car. They often traveled with their best friends and cousins from Searsmont, Lawrence and Louise Robbins. She was very close to her "boys,” Jenness and James Robbins of Searsmont, and their sister, Roberta Robbins Walker, after their mother, Louise Robbins, passed away. Every summer they traveled back to Searsmont to their cottage on Lake Quantabacook.

Most of all, Catherine loved her children, grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and was so grateful to have such a loving family. Special times were spent at the cottage on Lake Quantabacook, where her Searsmont family always gathered and her immediate family vacationed.

Her last nine years were spent at the Residence of Tall Pines in Belfast with her newly adopted "family" of residents, and staff. She loved them, and they all loved her, including her special friend, Sally Whitehead.

Catherine celebrated her 100th birthday last August with 85 family members in attendance.

Surviving are her two sons, Richard Lassen Alling and his wife, Helen, and Morton David Alling III, and his wife, Dorothy, her grandchildren, Dawn Alling Onishi and her husband, Steve, Dr. R. Douglas Alling and his wife, Sally, Wendy Alling Lundy and her husband, Steve, Darlene Alling Marino and her husband, Richard, and Morton David Alling IV and his wife, Rachel; 10 great-grandchildren, Jillian Onishi, Amelia Onishi, Thomas Onishi, Ryan Alling, Sara Alling, Catherine Lundy, Matthew Lundy, Genevieve Marino, Dominick Marino and Eva Jeannine Alling.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Morton David Alling Jr.; her brother, Max Morton; and her cousins, Doris Liberman and Lawrence Robbins.

A celebration of her life, followed by a reception, will be held Saturday, March 29 at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Searsport with the Rev. Debra Arnold officiating. A reception in Curtis Hall will immediately follow.

Private burial will be held at a later date in West Hartford, Conn. If desired, memorial gifts may be made to

Searsmont Community Center for The Friends of the Searsmont Library and/or the Searsmont Historical Society, P.O. Box 56, Searsmont, ME 04973 or to The Resident Council Account, c/o The Residence at Tall Pines, 24 Martin Lane, Belfast, ME 04915.
