Carlton F. Dougherty, obituary

LINCOLVILLE — Carlton Fred Dougherty, 86, passed away peacefully on Sept. 14, 2016, at home, surrounded by family. Born on Dec. 12, 1929, he was the son of Arthur Ray and Alice (Waterman) Dougherty and was a 1947 graduate of Camden High School and Lafayette College in 1951.

He had been a resident of Camden for many years and later a resident of Lincolnville.

Carlton married Myrna Curry, of Camden, in 1951, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in Florida and Puerto Rico.

Carlton returned to Maine in 1955 after serving in the military and was employed in the Camden Post Office. He later worked in the family business, Dougherty's Store, which later became the home of Cappy's Chowder House. For more than 20 years, Carlton managed Harborside West Marine Supply on Camden Harbor.

In 1980, Carlton married Iris McKay Dougherty, his wife of 36 years.

An active community member, Carlton served several terms as selectman for the Town of Camden and volunteered countless hours for the Camden Outing Club. Carlton was dedicated to the Megunticook Fish and Game and Megunticook Lake Association, and was an active member for 44 years.

Carlton was predeceased by his first wife, Myrna Curry Dougherty. He leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Iris McKay Dougherty of Lincolnville; two sisters, Rachel (Bernard) Young of Lincolnville and Pricilla (Keith) Patten of Hope; three children, Kerry (Dick Dyer) Dougherty, and Dale (Starr) Dougherty, all of Camden, and Joan (Paul) Ziegler of Charlotte, N.C.; and two stepchildren, Thomas McKay III of Lincolnville and Kathryn (Jeffrey Jackins) McKay of Camden; his grandchildren, Sean (Bronwyn) Dougherty, Ryan (Laura) Sirois, Kelsey (Roger Knight) Sirois, Danica (Don) Fullington, Dillon (Penelope Johnson) Dougherty, Kirsten (Matthew) Torres, Devyn (Josh) Bishop, Coleman, Michaela and Gianna Ziegler, Owen McGlamery, Thomas McKay, Rory (Erika) McKay, and Wilson McKay; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Carlton will be remembered for his love of family, the outdoors and his community.

A funeral service was held on Sept. 19, 2016, followed by burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Camden.
