ROCKLAND — On August 14, during an event sponsored by Archipelago in Rockland, author, Carl Howe Hansen, presented a check to Heather Deese, VP Strategic Planning for the Island Institute. “I wrote much of Destiny  while sailing and exploring the coastal islands of Maine. I wanted to give something back for that privilege. For their important work helping to preserve a way of life found on those islands, the Island Institute is the perfect vehicle for that,” said Hansen.

Destiny is a thriller, “a rip roaring thriller with a heart…” wrote Rebecca Pepper Sinkler, former editor-in-chief of The New York Times Book Review. Framed by the historic narrative of four generations of the Petersens, a Maine family, the attempt by Dr. Peter Petersen to solve the threat of oil spills evolves into the end of civilization, as we know it, when something goes horribly wrong. Ms. Sinkler goes on to say, “wild adventures at sea, geopolitical crisis, a frantic race to avoid calamity; all are made human by the story of two brilliant but estranged brothers grappling with their past.”

Destiny receives critical praise for its depiction of a Maine family during an ecological crisis: “There’s an adrenaline rush to the whole thing, with its chilling scenario of technology and science run amok…,” wrote Tina Cohen in the August issue of The Working Waterfront.

The author writes at his home in Sandwich, NH, and on his sailboat along the coast of Maine. His novel reflects his regional connections and interest in sailing. “It’s easier to write what I know, but I still had to do a lot of research to make the story feel real,” Hansen said.

The author will make appearances throughout New Hampshire and Maine to promote Destiny. Mr. Hansen received important recognition on June 8, 2015 when the New Hampshire State Library, Center for the Book, chose Destiny as their Book of the Week.
