BELFAST — Carl C. Hauswald Jr., retired baking executive, died at age 94 on Feb. 12, 2017, in the Hospice Unit at Waldo Country General Hospital in Belfast. His immediate family was with him.

A Baltimore native, Carl Jr. was born to Carl and Margaret Hauswald on May 19, 1922. He attended high school at Poly, where he played on the ice hockey team. After graduation in 1940, he attended Colgate University, where he served as co-captain of the ice hockey team. In the summer of 1943, after completing his junior year, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy's V-12 program and served for three years in the Pacific. (He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate with the class of 1944.)

Shortly after receiving an honorable discharge, Carl enrolled in 1946 in the American Institute of Baking school in Chicago, in advance of beginning his lifelong career at Hauswald's Bakery, the family business founded by his grandmother in the early 1900s. Carl was a respected member of several regional and national professional baking organizations, including the Potomac State Baker's Association and the American Society of Baking (formerly the American Society of Baking Engineers). He served as president of the latter organization in 1970, and on the Board of Governors of the American Bakers Association.

Carl was a gifted athlete who excelled at golf. His father, an avid golfer himself, began giving his son lessons as a child. It wasn't long before the son was out-playing his father. For many years, Carl was a scratch golfer and a familiar face at tournaments throughout the Baltimore area. He was an early member of Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Md., and was the club champion there in 1960, 1966 and 1967. He played many of the greatest courses in the country and several of the most iconic courses in Scotland. Carl passed on his love of the game to his son, grandson and several nephews, one of whom recalls, "Whatever course we played, everyone wanted to play with Uncle Carl." His only grandchild, Ryan, said, "Pop Pop, you'll always be my caddie. You remember that."

In 1989, Carl and his family sold the family bakery to the Schmidt Baking Company. In 2001, he and his wife moved from their home in Severna Park, Md., to be near their daughter and son-in-law in Maine. Carl continued to play golf well into his late-80s.

Carl will be remembered as a kind man who loved life, laughter, and above all, his family and friends.

Carl is survived by his wife of 69 years, Norma; his son, David and his wife, Anne, of Thornton, Colo.; his beloved grandson, Ryan Carl Hauswald and his wife, Dominique, of Westminster, Colo.; his daughter, Nancy and her husband, Jon Cheston, of Belfast; his twin brother, John of Salisbury, Md.; and his sister, Myrtle Walker of Baltimore. He is also survived by 16 nieces and nephews and two step-grandsons.

The family wishes to express its deepest gratitude to Dr. Heather Ward of Belfast; the staffs of Eastern Maine Medical Center's Cardiac Care Unit and Waldo County General Hospital; and the Hospice Volunteers of Waldo County for their grace, compassion and care for Carl.
