Car hits bicylist, sends one to hospital

    St. George — Just before 7 p.m. on Aug. 3, deputies from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported vehicle and bicycle crash on Rt. 131 (Port Clyde Road) in St. George, near Ridge Road, according to a news release from the department Aug. 5.

    According to witness statements, a 21-year-old female, riding a bicycle, was riding in the southbound lane of Rt. 131 traveling toward Port Clyde. The bicycle was struck by a car, operated by a 17-year-old female, which was travelling in the same direction on Route 131. 

    The 21-year-old female bicyclist suffered serious injuries and was taken, via LifeFlight, to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. She is reported as being in serious but stable condition.

    The 17-year-old female did not sustain any physical injuries, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

    Port Clyde Road was shut down for several hours while deputies investigated.

    The cause has yet to be determined and details will be released as they are known. Names are being withheld until notifications are verified.  

    Assistance was provided by Knox County Regional Communications Center, Saint George Fire and Ambulance, and LifeFlight of Maine.
